Lake Okataina is a stunning masterpiece of water to fish in.
The scenery, wilderness and serenity make it other worldly.
Add to this mix, some of the bigger rainbows you are likely to catch and you can see why the Lake Okataina fishing spots are sought after by all trout anglers.
Okataina is quite deep and most fisherman use the trolling methods to get their lures down to the feisty rainbows. The rainbow trout here have benefitted from the Tarawear hatchery breedding program, where large fish are commonplace here to trophy sizes.
The locals have their own theories on the best lure combos, some suggest flys some love to use tassie devils and small rapala lures. Bring a selection.
There is also shore fishing options around Okataina being close to the main beach, where the rocks protrude. Winter fishing here will net you nice, deep set rainbow trout.
Other popular options here are fly fishing from anchored boats near the Rayners one and two, and the Log Pool.
There is every chance of a trohpy rainbow at any of these spots at Lake Okataina, especially in the winter months when they cruise the margins.
